The Supreme Court of India has declined an urgent hearing on a petition seeking action over alleged police violence during protests held on July 20 by the Cockroach Janata Party, according to Indian media reports.
New Delhi, India – Web Desk: The court also declined to review video footage submitted with the petition. Indian media reported that Chief Justice Surya Kant remarked that the court did not have time to watch the videos and was not interested in reviewing them during the request for an urgent hearing.
The petition sought immediate judicial intervention over allegations of excessive police force against demonstrators during the protest.
The Cockroach Janata Party, an online political movement, was formed in May 2026 following public criticism of remarks previously made by Chief Justice Surya Kant during a court hearing. According to media reports, the chief justice had referred to some unemployed young people as “cockroaches” and a burden on society, sparking widespread backlash and online activism.
The Supreme Court has not yet announced when the petition will be heard under the normal judicial schedule.
