KARACHI, Pakistan – Web Desk: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has described July 5, 1977 as the darkest day in Pakistan’s democratic history, saying it marked the overthrow of the public mandate, the Constitution, and the country’s parliamentary democratic system.
In a statement issued on the anniversary of the military takeover, Bilawal said the events of July 5, 1977, dealt a severe blow to constitutional rule and democratic institutions by undermining the will of the people.
He said those behind the military rule believed they could silence the voices of the people, but the sacrifices of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, and countless pro-democracy workers proved that the principles of democracy and the people’s sovereignty could never be defeated.
Bilawal reaffirmed the Pakistan Peoples Party’s commitment to protecting the supremacy of the Constitution, safeguarding the sanctity of the vote, strengthening parliamentary democracy, and defending the people’s right to govern through democratic means.
He further said the true tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for democracy is to reject dictatorship and politics of hatred while continuing efforts to build a united, democratic, and progressive Pakistan.
The PPP has traditionally observed July 5 as a significant date in Pakistan’s political history, renewing its commitment to democratic values and constitutional governance.
