Mumbai Hit by 200mm Rainfall, Floods Disrupt Normal Life

Date:

MUMBAI, India – Web Desk: Torrential monsoon rains battered India’s financial capital, Mumbai, leaving large parts of the city flooded and severely disrupting daily life after nearly 200 millimetres of rainfall was recorded within 12 hours.

According to Indian media reports, heavy rainfall inundated low-lying areas, triggered widespread waterlogging, and caused major traffic disruptions across the city. Flood-like conditions were reported in several neighbourhoods, while fallen trees and damage to residential buildings added to the impact of the downpour.

Authorities said several roads caved in due to the relentless rain, while suburban train services—the city’s primary mode of public transport—were partially disrupted, affecting thousands of commuters.

The heavy rainfall also impacted neighbouring districts, including Thane, Palghar, Navi Mumbai, and Pune, where normal life was thrown into disarray.

Media reports said landslides were reported in parts of Pune, damaging road links and prompting rescue teams to evacuate residents from flood-affected areas to safer locations.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city’s eastern suburbs received an average of 186mm of rainfall between 8:00am and 8:00pm, while the western suburbs recorded 168mm and the island city received 129mm during the same period.

The BMC said Vikhroli West recorded more than 260mm of rainfall within 12 hours. Other areas, including Powai, Bhandup, Malad, Kandivali, Jogeshwari, and Andheri, each received more than 210mm of rainfall, highlighting the intensity of the monsoon system affecting Mumbai.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as weather officials have warned of further rainfall in the coming days.
