Washington, United States – Web Desk: President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 100% tariff on all goods imported from any country, including European nations, that imposes a digital services tax on American technology companies . The warning intensifies ongoing trade tensions between the United States and the European Union just days after a bilateral trade deal was finalized .
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump warned that any country proceeding with such taxes would “immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF” on all goods sent to the United States, adding that the penalty would supersede any existing trade agreements . The threat targets “numerous European countries” that Trump said are discussing or close to implementing digital services taxes .
The dispute centers on taxes applied to the revenues of major U.S. technology firms like Google, Apple, and Meta operating in Europe. While countries such as France, Italy, and Spain already have digital service taxes in place, others are considering similar measures . The United Kingdom has maintained a 2% digital services tax since 2020 .
The European Commission has pushed back, stating that such taxes are “non-discriminatory by design” and warning that “unilateral measures targeting such legitimate policies are unjustified. If pursued, the EU will respond swiftly and decisively to defend its rights and regulatory autonomy” . Economists warn that if implemented, the tariffs could significantly disrupt transatlantic trade and global supply chains .
