Muscat, Oman – Web Desk: Oman has announced plans to establish a temporary transit corridor for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz in coordination with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Oman’s Maritime Security Centre said the initiative is aimed at ensuring safe and uninterrupted maritime navigation while upholding international law in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
According to the statement, all commercial and non-commercial vessels intending to use the proposed corridor will be required to coordinate with the International Maritime Organization and relevant maritime authorities to ensure secure and efficient transit.
Omani officials said the measure comes amid heightened regional tensions and is part of broader efforts to safeguard global maritime trade routes and maintain stability in international supply chains.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes, carrying a significant share of global crude oil, natural gas, and commercial cargo shipments. Any disruption in the waterway can have immediate consequences for global energy markets and international trade.
Maritime experts believe the Oman-IMO initiative could help strengthen maritime security, reduce risks to commercial shipping, and restore confidence among international shipping companies at a time when developments in the Middle East continue to attract global attention.
