Lisbon, Portugal – Web Desk: Cristiano Ronaldo has come under heavy criticism following Portugal’s 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with a former England footballer suggesting the veteran forward is no longer suited for a starting role.
In the Group match, Portugal failed to secure victory despite taking an early lead through João Neves. DR Congo responded before halftime when Yoane Wissa equalised, leaving both teams to share points.
Ronaldo played the full 90 minutes but struggled to make an impact, failing to register a shot on target and missing two key scoring opportunities, drawing scrutiny over his performance.
Former England international Jay Bothroyd criticized the 41-year-old captain, stating that Ronaldo should no longer be part of the starting lineup and instead be used as a late substitute.
“He is not contributing the way the team needs at this level,” Bothroyd said, adding that “Ronaldo can never be Messi,” while also calling for a change in leadership responsibilities.
Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez defended his captain, insisting that removing Ronaldo in key moments when goals are needed is not a practical option for the team.
Portugal now face a must-win situation in their next group match against Uzbekistan to keep their hopes of progressing to the next stage alive.
