MIAMI – Web Desk: FIFA World Cup 2026 has officially become the largest football tournament in history, featuring 48 teams and a total of 1,248 players taking the field for the first time.
The mega event, kicking off on June 12, is being co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada — marking the first time in World Cup history that three nations are jointly hosting the tournament. The format is completely different this year, with 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four teams each. A total of 104 matches will be played, making the event longer and more thrilling.
Among the 1,248 players, 357 have previously played in a World Cup, while 891 will showcase their skills on this big stage for the first time. Football legends Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Guillermo Ochoa are all set to play in their sixth World Cup. Four nations — Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan — will participate in the World Cup for the first time, adding more unpredictability to the competition.
The youngest player in the event will be just 17 years old, while the oldest will be 43. Seven players are over 40 years of age, while 22 under-20 players will also represent their teams. FIFA World Cup 2026 is not only the largest event in terms of numbers but is also being seen as the beginning of a new era in football history.
