ISLAMABAD – Web Desk: The federal government has significantly increased the levy on petroleum products, raising concerns over further inflationary pressure on the already cash-strapped public.
According to sources, the petroleum levy on petrol has been increased by Rs 26.77 per litre, bringing the total levy to Rs 107.38 per litre. Prior to this hike, the levy stood at Rs 80.61 per litre.
The decision to increase the levy was made to boost government revenue and meet fiscal requirements, sources said.
It may be recalled that the federal government had previously increased the price of petrol and diesel by Rs 26.77 per litre. According to an official notification, the new price of petrol has been set at Rs 393.35 per litre, while diesel is now priced at Rs 380.19 per litre.
The back-to-back increases are expected to fuel transportation and food costs, adding to the financial strain on households already grappling with record inflation. Critics have questioned the timing of the levy hike, noting that international oil prices have shown signs of easing following US-Iran talks in Islamabad.
