500+ Questions Unanswered in Sindh Assembly Year

Date:

KARACHI (Web Desk) – The Sindh Assembly has completed its second parliamentary year with more than 500 questions submitted by lawmakers still unanswered by various provincial government departments, raising concerns over transparency and legislative oversight.

According to official records, the assembly functioned for 56 days during the year. A total of 25 days were observed as holidays, while no sessions were held on 19 days.

Notably, the Chief Minister did not respond to any questions related to departments under his administrative authority throughout the parliamentary year, lawmakers said.

Legislative Performance and Oversight

Despite entering its second year, elections for four standing committees of the Sindh Assembly have yet to be conducted, reflecting procedural delays within the provincial legislature.

Four seats in the provincial assembly also remain vacant even after elections were held, further affecting representation.

Over the first two parliamentary years combined, the House passed 48 government bills. However, legislative activity has been accompanied by concerns over accountability and scrutiny of executive actions.

In the second parliamentary year alone, members submitted 1,096 questions regarding the performance of various government departments. More than 500 of these queries remain unanswered.

Questions related to prisons, minerals, and services and general administration departments did not appear on the assembly’s agenda during the first two years, according to records.

Motions and Resolutions

The assembly currently has more than 25 parliamentary secretaries, yet nearly half reportedly did not respond to a single question concerning their respective departments during proceedings.

Lawmakers submitted 141 adjournment motions on public issues, but only four were debated in the House. Of the 393 resolutions submitted over the two-year period, 35 were passed while 305 were withdrawn.

Meanwhile, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Sindh Assembly held approximately 49 meetings during the second parliamentary year. However, no PAC meetings were conducted in the final two months due to internal disagreements, officials said.

The figures highlight growing debate over legislative efficiency, governance standards, and accountability mechanisms within Sindh’s provincial assembly as it moves into its third parliamentary year.
