PTI Slams Govt’s Rs40bn Social Media Firewall Plan

Date:

Web Desk, Peshawar – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram has criticized the government’s Rs40 billion social media firewall project, alleging that the initiative has failed and caused significant economic disruption.

In a statement, Akram said the firewall plan resulted in billions of rupees in losses to the national treasury while citizens continue to struggle with inflation and unemployment. He argued that the project negatively impacted Pakistan’s IT sector, freelancers, and online businesses, claiming that thousands of young professionals were forced to consider leaving the country.

The PTI leader described the initiative as evidence of what he termed government mismanagement, adding that the firewall project was politically motivated. The government has not yet issued an official response to the remarks.

The debate over internet regulation and digital governance has intensified in recent months, with stakeholders from the technology sector raising concerns about connectivity, cybersecurity policies, and their impact on Pakistan’s digital economy.
