Mexico City, Mexico – Web Desk: Mexican authorities reported that Nemesio Oseguera, alias “El Mencho,” the notorious leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed during a firefight with security forces in Jalisco. Critically wounded, he died while being transported to Mexico City.
The operation is seen in the context of pressure from the U.S., where former President Donald Trump had called for tougher action against drug cartels. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau described El Mencho’s death as a major regional breakthrough.
El Mencho had transformed CJNG into one of the world’s most powerful drug trafficking networks, rivaling the Sinaloa Cartel, once led by imprisoned drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
Following the killing, violent unrest erupted across Mexico. Vehicles were set on fire, armed groups blocked highways, and citizens were urged by Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro to remain indoors. Air Canada temporarily suspended flights to the coastal city of Puerto Vallarta due to security concerns. U.S. authorities also issued precautionary alerts for travelers and residents in the region.
