Karachi, Pakistan — Web Desk: Emerging Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq has revealed that former India captain MS Dhoni inspired him to pursue a career in cricket, highlighting the influence of global cricket icons on young players across borders.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup group-stage match against Namibia, Tariq said Dhoni was his role model and motivated him to return to cricket while he was working in a job outside the sport.
“Watching Dhoni made me decide to come back to cricket,” Tariq said, describing the former Indian captain’s leadership and calm approach as key inspirations.
The young spinner, who has recently attracted attention for his unique bowling action and variations, said he was not fully satisfied with his performance against India and believes he could have bowled better in the high-profile match.
Tariq also said the Indian team had prepared specifically to avoid giving him wickets, which boosted his confidence. “Knowing they practiced specially for me increased my confidence,” he added.
He emphasized that his main focus remains on winning matches rather than individual rivalries, and defended senior Pakistan players Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi, saying one poor match does not define their talent.
“Babar and Shaheen are big players. They have won many matches for Pakistan under pressure,” he said.
