Post-war Iran seeks to boost military power as reports hint at Russian Mi-28 deliveries
Tehran, Iran | Web Desk: Iran appears to be reinforcing its military capabilities following the recent 12-day conflict with Israel, as fresh reports suggest the possible arrival of Russian-made Mi-28 Havoc attack helicopters.
According to a US-based defence website, videos circulating on social media show a Russian Mi-28NE combat helicopter flying over Iran’s capital, Tehran. In recent days, images have also surfaced online indicating that at least one Mi-28NE helicopter may already be present inside Iran.
However, the defence website cautioned that the video could not be independently verified, and its time and location remain unconfirmed. Initial images are believed to have been taken inside a hangar operated by Pars Aerospace Services Company at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport.
The report further noted that on January 3, Iranian journalist Mohammad Taheri shared a post on social media platform X in Persian, discussing Iran’s military strength alongside an image of a Mi-28 helicopter painted in desert camouflage.
The Mi-28 attack helicopter is equipped with a 30mm automatic cannon and can carry a range of advanced weapons, including anti-tank guided missiles and rockets. It also features modern sensor systems, such as a mast-mounted radar and a forward-looking infrared camera.
Details regarding the exact number of Mi-28 helicopters supplied to Iran and their full operational capability remain unclear. The poor quality of the circulating footage has also limited independent verification of key details.
Defence analysts believe the potential presence of Mi-28 helicopters in Iran may signal an expansion of Russian military support, including the transfer of additional weapons and equipment. The report also highlighted that online flight-tracking data in January revealed at least five Il-76 transport aircraft flights from Russia to Iran.
In the aftermath of the recent conflict with Israel, Iran has been actively working to strengthen its military stockpiles. The possible delivery of Mi-28 helicopters is being viewed as part of this broader defence strategy. Available evidence suggests that at least one Mi-28 helicopter has already arrived in Iran, with further details expected to emerge in the coming days.
