US military prepares for possible renewed major operations against Iran as tensions escalate over the Strait of Hormuz and diplomatic negotiations remain uncertain.
WASHINGTON: The United States military is preparing for the possibility of renewed large-scale military operations against Iran as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue despite diplomatic efforts to prevent another major escalation.
The Pentagon has directed US Central Command (CENTCOM) to complete preparations for potential military action, giving President Donald Trump additional options if he decides to resume major combat operations.
The preparations include potential strikes against Iranian military installations, energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities. However, military planning does not automatically mean that a final decision to launch a new campaign has been made.
US Military Strengthens Regional Preparations
US forces have maintained a significant military presence across the Middle East, including naval deployments and additional military assets capable of supporting operations against Iranian targets.
Military planners have been examining different operational scenarios, while US officials have indicated that the Pentagon’s responsibility is to prepare military options for the president.
Previous reports also indicated that US forces in the region could be ready to launch potentially major operations within 96 hours of receiving an order from Trump.
Strait of Hormuz Remains a Major Concern
The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the confrontation between the two countries because of its importance to international oil shipments and maritime trade.
The US naval blockade and Iran’s restrictions on maritime traffic have contributed to continuing uncertainty across regional shipping routes and energy markets.
Any renewed military campaign could further threaten commercial shipping, increase energy prices and create additional security risks for countries across the Gulf region.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue Amid Military Tensions
Despite preparations for possible military action, diplomatic efforts have not completely stopped.
Regional mediators, including Qatar, have been involved in efforts to bring Washington and Tehran back towards negotiations. However, disagreements over Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions and maritime security remain major obstacles.
The latest developments also come amid growing concerns among regional governments that renewed large-scale fighting could spread beyond Iran and involve additional regional actors.
For now, the United States continues to maintain military options while diplomatic efforts remain part of the broader strategy. Whether Trump authorises another major operation against Iran will depend on subsequent political and security decisions.
