Russia says no formal notice from India on halting oil imports despite Trump’s announcement
Moscow, Russia – Web Desk: The Kremlin has clarified that it has received no official communication from India regarding a halt in Russian oil purchases, raising questions about recent claims made by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump had announced a trade deal with India, asserting that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured the U.S. that India would stop buying Russian oil in light of the Ukraine war. He also claimed tariff reductions on Indian goods from 25% to 18%.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Russia continues to view energy cooperation with India as “business as usual.” Russian President Vladimir Putin, during his visit to India in late 2025, had assured uninterrupted oil supply to the country.
Following the 2022 Ukraine invasion and Western sanctions on Russia, India increased imports of discounted Russian oil. Western allies have sought to limit Russia’s oil revenue to curb its military operations. Modi, while expressing gratitude for tariff adjustments, has not confirmed any commitment to cease Russian oil imports.
