JI Begins Signature Drive in City Council as Tensions Rise Over Mayor Murtaza Wahab

Karachi, Pakistan – Web Desk: Jamaat-e-Islami has officially started preparations to table a no-confidence motion against Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab in the City Council. According to Advocate Saifuddin, JI’s spokesperson, the signature collection process has begun, with 29 women councilors signing in the first phase.

JI holds 127 council seats, while discussions with other parties continue to gather additional support. Under the Local Government Act, no fixed number of signatures is required for the motion. However, Mayor Murtaza Wahab, supported by 32 dissident PTI members, is ineligible to contest in a potential re-election.

The City Council has a total of 367 members, meaning 185 votes are needed to successfully pass the no-confidence motion. Political analysts say the move intensifies Karachi’s local governance battle and could reshape alliances within the council.
