Punjab Assembly Submits Resolution for Direct Minority Elections

ML-N minority lawmakers demand separate or dual voting rights for fair representation

Lahore, Pakistan – Web Desk: A resolution has been submitted in the Punjab Assembly calling for direct elections of minority representatives, rather than selection through reserved seats.

Minority lawmakers from Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) have united to propose legislation that allows all minorities in Punjab to elect their representatives directly in the next general elections. The resolution, submitted by Christopher Philbos, Chair of the Standing Committee on Minority Affairs, emphasizes granting minorities either separate or dual voting rights to ensure genuine representation.

Lawmakers argue that the current reserved-seat system restricts minority members from playing an effective political role. Despite important constitutional amendments, such as the 26th and 27th amendments, minority representatives on reserved seats were not consulted, highlighting systemic limitations.

The resolution has garnered unanimous support in the assembly, signaling a strong push toward reforming minority representation in Punjab’s legislative process.
