CSIS warns of record post-WWII losses as conflict drags on with mounting casualties
Kyiv, Ukraine – Web Desk: A recent report by the Washington-based think tank, Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), warns that the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war could see total military casualties soar to 2 million if current trends persist.
According to the report, Russia has suffered nearly 1.2 million military losses since February 2022, including approximately 350,000 deaths. Ukraine, despite having a smaller army and population, has faced 500,000 to 600,000 military casualties, with fatalities possibly reaching 140,000. The report notes that neither country regularly publishes detailed casualty figures.
Experts emphasize that Russia’s claimed battlefield gains come at a steep human cost, weakening its overall military strength. The conflict has resulted in unprecedented losses for major powers since World War II.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed the CSIS findings, calling the research “unreliable” and stating that accurate military loss data is only available from the Russian Ministry of Defense.
Meanwhile, Russian attacks continue on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, killing at least two people and injuring several others. Civilian infrastructure has been damaged, highlighting the protracted and devastating nature of the conflict. Analysts warn that immediate peace prospects remain slim as human and military losses mount.
