Paris honors Ali Akbar with Grand Order of Merit for 50 years of service

Paris, France | Web Desk:
In a remarkable recognition of dedication and service, French President Emmanuel Macron has awarded Ali Akbar, a 74-year-old Pakistani-origin newspaper vendor, one of France’s highest civilian honors — the Grand Order of Merit (Knight).

Originally from Rawalpindi, Pakistan, Ali Akbar migrated to France in 1973 and has spent more than five decades selling newspapers in Paris’s historic Latin Quarter, particularly at café terraces. His warm personality and commitment turned him into a beloved local figure.

The prestigious award ceremony was held at the Élysée Palace, where President Macron praised Ali Akbar’s long-standing contribution to French civic life. The Grand Order of Merit is bestowed on individuals who render exceptional civil or military services to France.

After arriving in France, Ali Akbar began selling newspapers around Sorbonne University and nearby educational institutions, serving generations of students and academics. Over the years, he has helped preserve Paris’s traditional newspaper culture, gaining recognition from international media as well.

The honor is being widely celebrated as a moment of pride for the Pakistani community, highlighting the positive global impact of Pakistani expatriates.
