France Moves to Ban Social Media for Children Under 15

New Law Targets Online Abuse, Mental Health Risks for Young Teens

Paris, France – Web Desk: France’s National Assembly has approved a landmark bill restricting social media access for children under 15, a move aimed at protecting young users from rising online harassment, mental health challenges, and psychological stress. The bill now awaits approval from the French Senate before becoming law.

According to authorities, excessive social media use among children is linked to increased mental health problems, exposure to cyberbullying, and a higher likelihood of aggressive behaviors. Experts argue that limiting access can safeguard children’s psychological well-being while promoting healthier online habits.

The legislation also proposes extending the smartphone ban in middle schools to high schools, with the goal of enhancing the educational environment and keeping students focused on learning rather than digital distractions.

President Emmanuel Macron has consistently highlighted social media as a significant factor in rising youth violence and negative behavioral trends. He supports measures similar to Australia’s approach, which legally limits social media use for younger children.

If ratified by the Senate, France will join a select group of countries implementing legal restrictions on social media for minors, marking a significant step in child protection in the digital age. Lawmakers emphasized that the regulation is not aimed at total censorship but at reducing exposure to harmful online content while fostering safer educational spaces.

Child psychologists and education specialists have welcomed the move, noting that early intervention and regulated digital use are key to preventing long-term mental health issues. Parents are encouraged to work alongside schools to ensure children adapt positively to the new guidelines.

The bill reflects growing international concerns about children’s online safety, as research increasingly points to the psychological impacts of prolonged social media use on young minds. France’s initiative may serve as a model for other nations grappling with similar issues.
