Tehran: Iran’s Attorney General, Mohammad Moheddi Azad, has issued a stern warning to those participating in ongoing anti-government protests across the country.
According to Iranian media, the Attorney General declared that “every person taking part in protests is an enemy of God.”
Speaking on state television, he cautioned that Iranian law contains severe provisions under which “enemies of God” can face the death penalty.
He further stated that not only demonstrators but also those who assist the “rioters” will face prosecution under the same charges. He urged prosecutors to file cases swiftly and without leniency, prepare evidence, and move toward decisive action.
The protests, which began on December 28, 2025, were triggered by the falling value of the national currency, rising inflation, unemployment, and economic hardship. Thousands have taken to the streets, with demonstrations spreading from one city to another.
So far, violent clashes across 31 provinces and dozens of cities have left around 50 people dead, including security personnel, while hundreds have been arrested.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has previously described the protesters as “enemies of the nation” and endorsed the use of force. Iran’s Chief Justice also vowed that no leniency will be shown in legal proceedings against demonstrators.
