Zimbabwe Set 170-Run Target for Australia in T20 World Cup

Date:

Colombo, Sri Lanka — Web Desk: Zimbabwe set a competitive target of 170 runs for Australia in their T20 World Cup Group match after posting 169 for 2 in their allotted 20 overs at the R Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday.

Winning the toss, Australian captain Travis Head elected to field first, allowing Zimbabwe to bat on a surface that appeared conducive to stroke play. Zimbabwe’s openers provided a solid foundation, putting on 61 runs for the first wicket before Marumani was dismissed for 35 runs.

Brian Bennett then anchored the innings with a composed and aggressive knock, forming a crucial 70-run partnership for the second wicket with Ryan Burl. Burl scored 35 before falling at a team total of 131, but Zimbabwe maintained momentum through the middle and death overs.

Bennett remained unbeaten on 64, while captain Sikandar Raza added an unbeaten 25, guiding Zimbabwe to a strong finish without further losses. The Zimbabwean batting lineup showed discipline and controlled aggression, capitalizing on gaps in the field and maintaining a healthy scoring rate throughout the innings.

For Australia, Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green claimed one wicket each, but the bowling attack struggled to contain Zimbabwe’s top order, conceding boundaries at regular intervals.

The match marks only the second meeting between Australia and Zimbabwe in T20 World Cup history. The two sides previously faced each other in the inaugural 2007 edition, when Zimbabwe famously pulled off a historic upset victory against Australia.

With a target of 170, Australia will rely on its powerful batting lineup to chase the total, while Zimbabwe will aim to defend their score with disciplined bowling and fielding in what could be a pivotal contest in the tournament.
