Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Surges to 5,069 as Rescue Efforts Intensify

Caracas, Venezuela – Web Desk: The death toll from last month’s powerful earthquakes in Venezuela has climbed to 5,069, while 16,740 people have been injured, according to National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez .

Damage and Displacement

Rodriguez posted a breakdown on X, showing that authorities have assisted 128,324 families and established 106 temporary camps housing 21,235 people, while 17,907 remain without permanent housing. The quakes damaged 856 buildings, including 190 that collapsed .

Government Seeks Frozen Assets

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez renewed calls for the release of Venezuela’s frozen overseas assets to finance reconstruction. She said she has sent a letter to King Charles requesting the release of Venezuelan gold held at the Bank of England and has spoken with IMF officials about releasing funds .

Sanctions Relief

The US and EU have imposed sanctions on Venezuela over the past two decades. After the earthquakes, Washington authorized a four-month exemption for earthquake relief transactions that would otherwise have been banned by sanctions .
