WASHINGTON, United States – (Web Desk): US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States will rely on alternative legal provisions to maintain tariff measures following a recent ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States that invalidated President Donald Trump’s broad tariff actions.
In a statement issued after the court’s decision, Bessent said overall tariff levels this year are expected to remain largely unchanged from those currently in effect. However, he noted that the legal mechanism used to impose them will be revised.
The Treasury chief said the administration plans to invoke Section 232 and Section 301 of US trade law to implement tariffs. These provisions have previously been challenged in court but were upheld as lawful.
He acknowledged that the Supreme Court ruling has limited certain presidential authorities regarding tariff imposition. Nevertheless, he emphasized that tariff levels on specific countries would be maintained to a significant extent, though under a different legal framework.
Earlier, the Supreme Court ruled that President Trump had exceeded his authority in imposing sweeping tariffs without proper congressional backing. The court said the measures had far-reaching consequences for global trade and reaffirmed Congress’s constitutional role in trade and taxation matters.
The development marks a new phase in US trade policy, as the administration seeks to preserve its tariff strategy while navigating judicial constraints. Analysts say the shift in legal basis could influence ongoing trade negotiations and global market stability.
