US Officials Say Sanctions, Not Strikes, May Bend Iran

Date:

Washington D.C. – Web Desk: American officials have suggested that economic sanctions and financial pressure on Iran could prove more effective than military strikes in compelling Tehran to return to negotiations, though they acknowledge it may take considerable time.

According to a report by a US broadcaster, senior administration officials believe Iran is currently facing severe financial strain, including petrol shortages, major bank withdrawals, and difficulties in paying its fighters—pressures intensified by US sanctions and a naval blockade [citation:8].

Treasury Over Pentagon

One US official claimed that Iran fears the US Treasury Department more than the Department of War. However, officials also admitted that using economic pressure to push Iran toward a deal could take significantly longer than achieving the same outcome through military force [citation:8].

The report indicated that access to Iran’s frozen overseas assets and the easing of economic sanctions remain key sticking points in negotiations between Washington and Tehran. These issues are central to efforts to convert the current ceasefire into a permanent end to hostilities [citation:8].
