Washington D.C. – Web Desk: The United States Treasury Department has unveiled a new commemorative $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump’s portrait, marking the first time a sitting president’s image will appear on US coinage .
Coin Design and Features
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the design on social media, stating the coin “celebrates the strength of American values, and the promise of a nation dedicated to preserving freedom for all” . The obverse features Trump’s stern-faced portrait with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “LIBERTY,” and “1776–2026” . The reverse depicts the traditional bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States with the Latin phrase “E PLURIBUS UNUM” .
Legal Debate and Production
The coin, which has a gold finish rather than being solid gold, is in production at the Philadelphia Mint and will be available in fall 2026 . Federal law generally prohibits living presidents from appearing on US currency, but the administration has cited a 2020 law authorizing special designs for the nation’s 250th anniversary and the precedent of Calvin Coolidge’s appearance on a 1926 commemorative half-dollar .
