WASHINGTON – Web Desk: The United States has imposed sanctions on Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, his wife, and three other individuals, according to the US Department of Treasury.
The sanctions represent the Trump administration’s latest move to pressure Cuba’s leadership. The list also includes Alejandro Castro Espin, the only son of former president Raul Castro and Vilma Espin, who served as an advisor to Cuba’s Defense and National Security Commission. Raul Alejandro Castro Cales, the son of Alejandro Castro Espin, was also added to the list.
The sanctions follow President Donald Trump’s signing of an executive order expanding sanctions against the island nation. Since the removal of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in January, Trump has been threatening military action against Cuba, also ordering an energy blockade that has caused severe blackouts, food shortages, and economic devastation across the island.
