US Fighter Jets Damaged in Iranian Missile Strike on Jordan Air Base
AMMAN, JORDAN — WEB DESK: Multiple US military aircraft were damaged during Iranian strikes on the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, marking another escalation in the ongoing confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
CBS reporter Jennifer Jacobs reported that an A-10 Thunderbolt, commonly known as the Warthog, was hit and left missing a wing. Around eight F-15 fighter jets also sustained light damage but were subsequently returned to service. Reuters independently reported Jacobs’ account, though the details were attributed to CBS rather than an independent Reuters assessment of the aircraft damage.
The reported damage follows an Iranian ballistic missile attack targeting US forces near Al Azraq in Jordan. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it carried out the attack as regional hostilities intensified following US strikes against Iranian oil tankers.
Jordan’s military said its air-defence systems intercepted 18 of 20 Iranian missiles, while two landed in unpopulated areas. Jordan reported no casualties from that attack.
The latest aircraft-damage report is significant because it indicates that at least some Iranian weapons or their effects reached military assets despite the high interception rate reported by Jordan.
Muwaffaq Salti Air Base has become strategically important during the regional conflict because Jordan is a close US ally and hosts American military personnel and aircraft. The base has faced repeated Iranian threats and attacks during the conflict.
The escalation comes amid a broader exchange of strikes between Washington and Tehran. The US military said it recently destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers after what Washington described as Iranian attempts to target an American warship with ballistic missiles. Iran subsequently retaliated against US targets in Jordan.
The confrontation has also intensified concerns over regional security and global energy supplies, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz. Continued attacks on military facilities, warships and energy infrastructure could increase the risk of a wider Middle East conflict.
The precise overall cost of the damage to US aircraft at the Jordanian base has not yet been publicly established in the reporting reviewed.
