Washington and Abu Dhabi have formed a new joint task force to speed up the use of artificial intelligence across military operations.
Abu Dhabi, UAE – Web Desk: The United States and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to establish the world’s first joint military task force dedicated to artificial intelligence, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced. The agreement was signed on Tuesday, July 28, and aims to fast-track the integration of AI tools into defence operations between the two allies.
The new body, named Talon Synapse, will be headquartered in Abu Dhabi and will bring together roughly 20 specialists from both countries, drawn from fields including artificial intelligence, data analysis and cybersecurity. According to CENTCOM, the task force is expected to become fully operational within the coming weeks.
CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper described the agreement as a major step forward in defence cooperation with a key regional partner. He said the deal marks a historic milestone as the two sides work together to rapidly deliver evolving AI advancements to warfighters, adding that both countries share a strong commitment to adopting AI at speed and scale.
Independent verification of additional official remarks beyond those released by CENTCOM has not been possible at this time.
The initiative is designed to apply AI across several priority areas, including intelligence support, protection of critical infrastructure, and surveillance of the wider regional security environment. Officials say the aim is to help military personnel process information faster and respond to emerging threats with greater speed.
Discussions on forming the joint task force reportedly began last year, well before the current agreement was finalised. Its launch, however, comes at a sensitive moment, with the United States engaged in military action against Iran and the UAE having faced missile and drone attacks linked to Iranian forces in recent weeks.
CENTCOM has not clarified whether the timing of the task force’s launch is connected to ongoing military operations in the region, and no further details on that link have been made public so far.
The Talon Synapse initiative reflects a broader global trend of militaries incorporating AI into surveillance, logistics and decision-making systems. As the task force prepares for its formal rollout, further details on funding, leadership structure and operational scope are expected to be announced by CENTCOM and Emirati defence officials in the coming weeks.
