Washington, United States – Web Desk: The United States has begun the process of withdrawing approximately 5,000 troops from Germany, according to statements from the U.S. Department of Defense, amid rising diplomatic tensions within the NATO alliance.
Officials said the drawdown follows heightened disagreements between Washington and European allies over strategic and diplomatic approaches related to ongoing geopolitical conflicts, including the situation involving Iran.
A senior Pentagon official, speaking on condition of anonymity, described recent political rhetoric from German leadership as “unhelpful and inappropriate,” adding that the U.S. President is responding to conflicting signals from European partners.
The official further indicated that the withdrawal process is expected to be completed within six to twelve months. Currently, around 35,000 active-duty American troops are stationed in Germany, the largest U.S. military presence in Europe.
The move reportedly follows remarks and policy disagreements involving U.S. President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, which have contributed to increased strain in transatlantic relations.
While the U.S. maintains that its commitment to NATO remains intact, the decision signals growing friction over defense burden-sharing and foreign policy alignment between the United States and European allies.
