UK temperatures rise to 28°C as late-september warm spell hits

Date:

Southeast England is set for an unusually warm Friday before cooler conditions return and wetter weather develops next week.

Web Desk: The United Kingdom is experiencing an unusually warm spell for late September, with temperatures forecast to reach up to 28°C in parts of southeast England on Friday, September 25.

The Met Office described conditions as “exceptionally warm” for this time of year, with high pressure over continental Europe helping draw warmer air towards Britain.

Southeast England sees the highest temperatures

The warmest conditions are expected across southern and southeastern parts of England.

The Met Office forecast temperatures around 27–28°C in parts of the southeast on Friday, while some areas will see sunny spells after early fog and low cloud clear.

Norwich is forecast to reach around 25°C, with Geo noting that this could make the city warmer than Athens, where temperatures were expected to reach about 24°C.

Elsewhere, Cardiff is expected to see temperatures around 21°C, while parts of Wales could experience cloud and showers.

Cooler conditions expected after Friday

The warm spell is not expected to last.

According to the Met Office, a weakening cold front will move southeast from Friday night into Saturday, bringing temperatures closer to seasonal levels. Saturday is expected to remain largely dry and fine in many areas, although conditions will vary across the country.

The London and southeast England forecast, for example, puts Saturday’s maximum around 21°C, significantly below Friday’s peak.

Wet and windy weather forecast next week

A more significant change is expected during the first part of next week.

The Met Office forecasts a deep area of low pressure moving close to the UK, potentially bringing wet and windy conditions. Western and southwestern coastal areas could be affected by the combination of unsettled weather and high spring tides.

The latest long-range forecast also indicates that Atlantic frontal systems could bring periods of rain, showers and occasional strong winds from September 29 into early October.

Warm spell follows an exceptionally hot UK summer

The late-September warmth comes after an exceptionally hot summer in Britain.

The Met Office said summer 2026 was provisionally the UK’s warmest summer on record, with a mean temperature of 16.5°C. The agency also reported that the summer was among the UK’s sunniest on record and notably dry in many areas.
