LONDON, United Kingdom – Web Desk: Britain is currently in the grip of an intense heatwave that has disrupted daily life, with the Met Office confirming that June 2026 has become the second hottest June in the country in the past 142 years.
According to the UK Meteorological Office, this marks the first time since 1884 that June has been recorded among the hottest months in the nation’s history.
Data indicates that England and Wales experienced their second warmest June since records began in 1884. The Met Office reported that average temperatures this year were significantly above normal, highlighting the continuing impact of climate change and global warming. According to British media, the unusually high temperatures were not confined to daytime hours; nighttime temperatures also set new records across England, Wales, and Scotland, subjecting residents to oppressive heat and humidity.
The heatwave peaked in Charlwood, Surrey, where the temperature reached 35.7°C, setting a new record for the month of June. This surpassed the previous record of 35.6°C set in June 1976. Meteorological experts noted that the effects of the ongoing heatwave across Europe are clearly being felt in the UK, with temperatures expected to remain above average in the coming days.
Experts warn that climate change is causing extreme heatwaves to occur more frequently and with greater intensity, negatively impacting public health, energy systems, transportation, and the environment. Authorities have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary sun exposure, stay hydrated, and pay special attention to the elderly, children, and those with health conditions.
