Britain will use RAF Typhoon jets for defensive air missions and provide additional military transport and advisory support to Saudi Arabia.
LONDON, UK — WEB DESK: The United Kingdom will deploy Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets to help protect Saudi Arabia from increasing attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement, the British government announced on Tuesday.
The deployment forms part of additional defensive military assistance intended to protect Saudi cities and critical national infrastructure against aerial attacks. The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that the fighter jets would operate in a defensive role and would not conduct offensive strikes against Houthi targets.
UK expands military support to Saudi Arabia
Alongside the fighter jets, Britain will provide an RAF A400M military transport aircraft to help move defence equipment within Saudi Arabia. British military advisers will also be deployed to support Saudi military staff officers.
The measures expand Britain’s existing assistance to the kingdom, which includes air-defence equipment and air-to-air refuelling support for Saudi defensive air operations.
The British government said it would extend the air-to-air refuelling arrangement for a further 90 days. The additional support follows a request from the Saudi government amid rising regional security concerns.
Riyadh faces growing aerial threats
The announcement comes as Houthi missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia intensify. British officials have highlighted attacks targeting civilian infrastructure, including King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.
UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said the continuing attacks threatened regional stability and justified additional defensive assistance.
The British government said RAF Typhoon aircraft would help protect Saudi airspace against incoming missiles and drones. It stressed that the new fighter-jet mission would not involve offensive strikes against the Houthis.
Regional security and energy supplies
The deployment comes amid escalating violence in Yemen and growing concerns about the security of regional trade and energy supplies.
The Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait are important international shipping routes. Continued instability in the wider region could affect commercial transport, energy markets and the security of neighbouring countries.
Britain has also warned that regional instability could increase costs for businesses and consumers through disruption to energy supplies and trade.
UK reiterates support for a political solution
While announcing additional military assistance, the British government said it continued to support diplomatic efforts and a United Nations-led political process aimed at achieving a lasting resolution to the Yemen conflict.
London also expressed concern about the humanitarian consequences of continued fighting and said its engagement would include diplomatic and humanitarian efforts alongside defence cooperation.
The latest announcement marks an expansion of Britain’s support for Saudi Arabia’s air defence as regional tensions continue.
