LONDON, United Kingdom – Web Desk : A Venezuela-style political strategy reportedly pursued by former U.S. President Donald Trump to influence Iran’s leadership has failed, according to a report published by the British newspaper The Telegraph.
The report said the strategy mirrored Washington’s earlier attempt in Venezuela, where the United States supported opposition leadership in an effort to reshape the country’s political direction. The same approach was reportedly considered for Iran to establish a leadership structure favorable to U.S. interests.
However, the selection of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new supreme leader has effectively blocked such efforts. According to the report, Iran’s religious and military institutions continue to maintain strong control over the country’s political system, leaving little room for external influence.
The report added that the White House had also shown limited interest in promoting Reza Pahlavi—the son of Iran’s former monarch—as a potential alternative leadership figure.
Analysts cited in the report noted that installing a pro-Western leadership in Iran through external pressure appears highly unlikely given the current power structure. Iran’s political establishment remains consolidated around its religious leadership and security institutions.
The report also highlighted the immediate economic effects of the ongoing conflict, including rising global oil and gas prices, which are increasing political pressure on Washington.
Meanwhile, the report suggested that Israel may attempt to challenge Iran’s emerging leadership, though the country’s current power structure remains firmly in place.
