Trump Says Iran Is ‘Failing Badly’ as US Military Option Remains Open

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES — WEB DESK: US President Donald Trump has left open the possibility of further American action against Iran, describing the country’s military and economic situation in strongly negative terms as tensions continue across the Middle East.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, October 9, Trump declined to rule out action before the November 3 US midterm elections, while providing no details about what Washington might do.

Trump Leaves Timing of Possible Action Unclear

When questioned about whether an American response could take place before the elections rather than afterwards, Trump replied:

The president went on to describe Iran as a country facing serious military and economic difficulties.

He claimed that Iran’s military had been defeated and that its naval and air capabilities had been eliminated.

Trump also asserted that inflation in Iran had reached 300%.

These statements represent the president’s assessment. The figures and sweeping claims about Iran’s military capabilities were not independently substantiated in the reported remarks.

Trump did not identify specific military targets, announce an operation or provide a timetable for possible action.

Comments Come Ahead of November Elections

The remarks come as the United States approaches its November 3 congressional elections.

Washington’s handling of the Iran conflict remains an important foreign-policy issue, particularly because regional instability has affected energy markets and international shipping.

The president’s latest comments leave open several possible responses, including diplomatic, economic or military measures.

However, no new American strike was announced during the exchange with reporters.

US Moves to Increase Diesel Supplies

In a separate development, Trump said Russia had agreed to increase diesel supplies to international markets following discussions with President Vladimir Putin.

He said the arrangement would initially involve more than 300,000 metric tonnes of diesel, equivalent to approximately 2.25 million barrels.

The US administration also temporarily eased restrictions affecting Russian diesel shipments, with a Treasury licence permitting imports until April 7.

Trump said additional deliveries could follow, including another 500,000 tonnes in November.

The arrangement comes amid elevated diesel prices linked to disruptions in global energy supplies.

Ukraine Criticises Russian Fuel Arrangement

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticised the US decision to facilitate Russian fuel exports, arguing that additional revenues could benefit Moscow during its war against Ukraine.

The move also drew criticism from some American lawmakers.

Energy-market analysts questioned whether the additional Russian supply would be sufficient to deliver sustained reductions in diesel prices.

The reported average US diesel price stood at approximately $6.28 per gallon on Thursday, while diesel futures declined following news of the arrangement.

Uncertainty Persists Over Iran Policy

Trump’s comments underline the uncertainty surrounding Washington’s next steps towards Tehran.

Although he suggested that further action remained possible, the president did not confirm that a military operation had been approved.

His assessment of Iran’s economic and military condition also remains separate from independently verified evidence about the country’s current capabilities.

For now, the latest development is a renewed presidential warning, not confirmation that the United States has launched or authorised another attack on Iran.
