Trump Hails Saudi-Türkiye-Pakistan Makkah Defence Pact as ‘Big, Bold’ Step

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES — WEB DESK: US President Donald Trump has welcomed the landmark Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan, describing the trilateral security pact as a major step towards strengthening regional defence capabilities.

Trump praised the agreement in a Truth Social post on Sunday, saying he was pleased to see the three countries sign the pact and arguing that it demonstrated greater regional cooperation.

The US president described the agreement as a “BIG, BOLD, AND IMPORTANT FIRST STEP,” while congratulating the leadership of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan.

Trump says region is coming together

Trump said the agreement showed how countries in the Middle East were increasingly coming together and would be better positioned to defend themselves.

His public endorsement is significant because the Makkah agreement creates a new security framework involving three major Muslim-majority countries that maintain important relationships with Washington.

The pact was signed in Makkah on August 7, 2026, by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The agreement establishes a collective-defence commitment under which an armed attack against one member would be regarded as an attack against all three.

Pact expands military cooperation

Beyond the mutual-defence commitment, the agreement provides for deeper political and military coordination among Islamabad, Riyadh and Ankara.

The three countries plan high-level strategic mechanisms involving senior defence and foreign-policy officials as well as their armed forces.

Cooperation is expected to include joint military exercises across land, sea, air and cyber domains. The framework also covers emerging military technologies such as unmanned systems, electronic warfare and artificial intelligence, alongside defence-industry cooperation, joint production and technology transfer.

Türkiye has described the arrangement as defensive and said it is not intended to replace the signatories’ existing alliances.

Agreement could expand to other countries

The three-country framework may not remain limited to its founding members.

Turkish President Erdogan has said Egypt could potentially join the pact, describing the agreement as open to additional countries.

Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain have also welcomed the new defence arrangement, signalling wider regional interest in the initiative.

The possibility of expansion could increase the agreement’s geopolitical importance at a time when Middle Eastern states are reassessing regional security arrangements and seeking greater defence coordination.

New regional security architecture

The agreement comes amid significant geopolitical tensions across the Middle East and growing debate over how regional countries should structure their long-term security partnerships.

Analysts have described the pact as an important step towards greater strategic autonomy for its members, although its practical military implications will depend on how its collective-defence commitments and coordination mechanisms are implemented.

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye each bring different strategic capabilities to the partnership, while maintaining their own relationships with the United States and other global powers.

Trump’s endorsement suggests Washington currently views the agreement positively rather than as a direct challenge to existing US security relationships in the region.

For Pakistan, the pact also represents a significant expansion of its defence partnerships with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, potentially increasing Islamabad’s role in emerging regional security arrangements.

The agreement’s longer-term significance will depend on its implementation, possible expansion and how its collective-defence provisions operate during future regional crises.
