Three traffic police officers were killed after gunmen opened fire on their patrol vehicle in Tank’s Wazirabad area. Police launched a search operation.
TANK, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: Three traffic police officers were killed on Monday after armed assailants opened fire on their mobile patrol vehicle in Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to police.
The attack took place in the Wazirabad area of Tank district, where the traffic police vehicle came under gunfire.
Police said the attackers were travelling on a motorcycle and fled the area after carrying out the shooting. No information about their identities was immediately available.
Security personnel reached the scene following the attack and launched a search operation to locate the assailants. The three officers killed in the shooting were transported to a hospital, according to the initial police account.
Authorities had not immediately announced the names of the three officers in the initial report. There was also no immediate information on arrests linked to the shooting.
As of the initial reporting, no group had been identified as responsible for the attack, and police had not publicly established a motive. The incident should therefore not be attributed to any militant organisation unless authorities or independently verified reporting subsequently establish responsibility.
The shooting comes amid continuing security concerns in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where police and other security personnel have faced repeated attacks. Recent violence in the wider province has intensified debate over measures needed to protect law-enforcement personnel and civilians.
Separately, security personnel were targeted in another shooting near Chilas late Sunday, where a Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts soldier and two police personnel were injured when their patrol vehicle came under fire. No group had claimed responsibility for that attack at the time of reporting.
In Tank, police were continuing their search for the motorcycle-borne attackers following Monday’s shooting. Further details about the investigation and the identities of the officers were awaited.
