Andrew and Tristan Tate remain in a Miami federal detention centre as their lawyers challenge their extradition to Britain over rape charges.
WEB DESK: Social media influencers Andrew Tate and Tristan Tate are being held in solitary confinement at a federal detention centre in Miami as they fight a British request for their extradition over rape charges.
The brothers, who hold dual US and British citizenship, were arrested in Miami on July 18 after Britain requested their extradition. Both have denied wrongdoing.
Lawyers raise concerns over jail conditions
The brothers’ lawyers have criticised the conditions at the Federal Detention Center Miami, saying the pair have faced harsh conditions while being held separately from the general prison population.
Andrew Tate has alleged through posts on X that he was given unclean water, kept awake by noise from neighbouring inmates and denied regular exercise. His lawyers have also claimed that the brothers’ beds are shorter than they are and lack pillows.
Prosecutors have rejected the characterisation of the detention conditions as unlawful.
In an August 10 court filing, US prosecutors said the brothers were being held in the facility’s Special Housing Unit for their own safety. They argued that their conditions were reasonable and constitutional.
Prosecutors defend detention conditions
The US Bureau of Prisons said an annual test found the jail’s drinking water safe.
Prosecutors also said the brothers have adequate sleeping arrangements, food and access to water, while being permitted to request additional supplies when needed. They said the Tates were allowed out of their cells on an “almost daily” basis for recreation and meetings with lawyers.
The detention centre has nevertheless experienced infrastructure problems in recent months, including water pressure issues and air-conditioning failures.
The Bureau of Prisons said a water pressure problem reported on July 1 was resolved the following day, while a malfunctioning air-conditioning chiller was repaired after breaking down earlier in July.
Bail hearing scheduled
Andrew and Tristan Tate are expected to appear before a federal judge in Miami on Thursday to seek release on bail while they contest Britain’s extradition request.
The brothers face allegations in Britain involving rape and related offences. They deny the allegations and are fighting the extradition process.
