Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Orders Closure of 700 Liquor Shops

Date:

Chennai, India – Web Desk: Tamil Nadu’s newly appointed Chief Minister and former film star Joseph Vijay has ordered the closure of more than 700 state-run liquor outlets in a major policy move aimed at reducing alcohol consumption in the southern Indian state.

According to Indian media reports, CM Vijay directed authorities to shut 717 liquor shops operated by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC), particularly those located within a 500-metre radius of temples, schools, and bus stands.

Officials have been instructed to complete the closure process within two weeks, marking one of the most significant regulatory actions on alcohol sales in recent years.

The decision is being viewed as part of the new government’s broader effort to address social issues linked to alcohol consumption and public health concerns. However, the move has triggered mixed reactions across political circles and social media, with supporters praising it as a welfare-oriented step while critics warn of potential economic impact.

Vijay’s party, TVK, recently secured 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, forming the government with the support of allied parties. He was sworn in as Chief Minister earlier this month, and this decision is being seen as an early indication of his policy direction.
