Sydney, Australia – Web Desk: Australia has added senior batsman Steve Smith to its 15-member squad for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, replacing pacer Josh Hazlewood, who was ruled out due to injury.
Smith, who arrived in Sri Lanka last week, participated in team training sessions and has been officially cleared for inclusion by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The addition comes after Australia struggled in their opening matches, including a surprising loss to Zimbabwe, highlighting the importance of Smith’s experience and leadership for the team’s campaign.
Fast bowler Sean Abbott was initially called up as Hazlewood’s replacement but was not formally added to the squad. Selector Tony Dodemaide explained that ICC rules require squad changes to be confirmed at least one day before a match. Given fitness uncertainties surrounding key players Mitchell Marsh and Josh Stones, Smith’s inclusion was deemed critical to strengthen Australia’s lineup.
Smith’s presence is expected to bolster the middle order and provide stability to the team as Australia seeks to rebound in the tournament.
