Seoul, South Korea – Web Desk: South Korea has received its first crude oil shipment via the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing regional tensions, easing concerns over potential disruptions to energy supplies.
According to international news agency AFP, the Malta-flagged oil tanker Odessa was spotted near the coastal waters of Seosan early Friday morning. The vessel is reported to be carrying approximately 1 million barrels of crude oil.
The shipment is being seen as significant because it is the first tanker to successfully reach South Korea through the Strait of Hormuz during a period of heightened geopolitical tension and reported restrictions in the region.
Energy analysts say the arrival of the cargo is expected to reduce immediate concerns over South Korea’s energy security and supply chain stability, particularly amid escalating tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran that have affected global oil flows.
Industry sources confirmed that the crude oil will be processed at domestic refineries before being distributed in the form of petrol, diesel, and other petroleum products across the local market.
Reports indicate that the Odessa crossed the Strait of Hormuz on April 17 during a brief easing of maritime restrictions. Meanwhile, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that another vessel damaged in an explosion and fire near the United Arab Emirates has arrived at a port in Dubai.
Authorities say investigations are underway to determine the cause of the incident, while South Korea has refrained from making any official conclusions until inquiries are completed.
