Sindh Takes Notice: Transport Fares Hike Illegal – Sharjeel Inam Memon

Date:

Karachi, Pakistan – Web Desk: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has taken notice of unauthorized increases in public transport fares across the province and issued strict directives for immediate action against violators.

Speaking at a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department on March 9, 2026, Memon condemned transporters for arbitrarily raising fares by citing recent rises in petroleum product prices. He described such unilateral hikes as an unjust burden on the public, particularly amid economic pressures from global oil volatility linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict.

The minister emphasized that only the government and the Transport Department hold authority to revise fares. Any transporter increasing rates without official approval will face severe legal consequences.

Memon instructed the Secretary Transport to immediately review existing fare structures and determine new, balanced, and reasonable rates. He also directed the department to launch field inspection campaigns without delay to monitor compliance and enforce the official fare structure.

To address public grievances effectively, he ordered the establishment of a robust complaint redressal mechanism. The minister reiterated the Sindh government’s commitment to providing relief to citizens and ensuring no one is allowed to exploit the current situation.

The move comes as fuel costs remain elevated due to international market disruptions, including the Strait of Hormuz blockade and refinery attacks in the Gulf, putting additional strain on low- and middle-income households reliant on public transport.
