Sindh plans to amend LG laws to extend mayor’s term until next elections

Date:

KARACHI (Web Desk) – The Sindh government has initiated the process of amending the Local Government Act, with a proposal to allow the mayor to remain in office until the next local elections.

Sources said a special committee is actively working on the proposed changes and these are expected to be completed by the end of this month.

According to the proposed amendments, it has been suggested that the mayor should remain in office until the next local body elections and continue to hold the mayor’s office.

Currently, the law requires the mayor to vacate the position after completing a four-year term, but the new amendment seeks to extend their tenure until the next local elections.
In addition, the proposal includes dissolving local town councils after completing their four-year term.

Recommendations are also being made to change the multi-layered governance system in Karachi, and there is discussion on increasing the powers and responsibilities of the Deputy Mayor and Vice Chairpersons.

Sources also suggested that there may be a review of the direct funding and administrative powers for local town councils. Several proposals regarding changes in the structure of local bodies and a new distribution of powers are being considered.

The special committee is also consulting with various stakeholders regarding the amendments to the local government law, and final recommendations are expected to be finalized soon.
