Sindh Assembly Extends Rangers Deployment for Another Year
KARACHI, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: The Sindh Assembly has unanimously approved the deployment of Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) across the province for another year, extending the paramilitary force’s role in assisting civil authorities until July 19, 2027.
Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar presented the resolution in the provincial assembly, which approved the extension covering the period from July 20, 2026, to July 19, 2027. The resolution was adopted under the constitutional framework governing the deployment of federal forces in aid of provincial civil authorities.
Pakistan Rangers were first deployed in Sindh in 1989 under Article 147 of the Constitution, Dawn reported.
The latest resolution said the continuing deployment was considered necessary because of the province’s prevailing law-and-order situation and the need to protect public peace, life and property.
Assembly Cites Security Threats
According to the resolution, Rangers worked closely with the Sindh Police and other law-enforcement agencies during the previous deployment period, conducting intelligence-based operations, assisting in arrests of proclaimed offenders and other suspects, and recovering illegal arms and ammunition.
The resolution credited this coordination with contributing to improvements in the overall security situation, including reductions in target killings, street crime and other serious offences. These assessments are contained in the assembly resolution and should be understood as the provincial government’s stated evaluation of Rangers’ performance.
Lawmakers were also told that current threat assessments indicate the continued presence and activity of proscribed organisations, high-profile absconders and an evolving security environment that could pose risks to public safety during 2026-27.
The Sindh government said that after reviewing the security situation and operational performance of Rangers, it considered their continued deployment necessary to consolidate gains in law and order and strengthen internal security.
Deployment Extended Until July 2027
The new approval follows the previous one-year deployment, which ran from July 20, 2025, to July 19, 2026.
The assembly has now formally ratified the continuation of Rangers’ functions in aid of civil power throughout Sindh for another year.
The development is particularly significant for Karachi, where Rangers have played a major security role for decades alongside the provincial police.
The assembly session also addressed several other issues affecting Sindh.
Lawmakers adopted a joint resolution paying tribute to Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, while the house observed a moment of silence and offered prayers in his memory. The resolution was jointly moved by lawmakers from the PPP, MQM-P, PTI and Jamaat-i-Islami.
Karachi Load-Shedding Also Raised
Electricity outages also came under discussion during the session.
Sindh Assembly Speaker Syed Owais Qadir Shah directed the home minister to ensure that chief executives of electricity distribution companies, including K-Electric, appear before the assembly’s special committee on power utilities.
Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon described load-shedding as a serious problem and criticised the handling of the electricity sector, noting that Karachi continued to experience outages despite K-Electric being privately operated.
The Rangers extension, however, was the session’s major security decision, ensuring that the paramilitary force will continue assisting Sindh’s civil administration and law-enforcement agencies through July 2027.
