New Delhi, India – Web Desk: Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar expressed strong frustration during an Indian television sports programme after a female anchor raised political perspectives during the discussion.
During the live broadcast, the anchor suggested that Akhtar should consider an alternative viewpoint, leading to a heated exchange. Akhtar responded by stressing that the programme was focused on sports, not politics. He said, “You can belong to any religion, you are like my sister, but this is a sports show. We should talk about sports.”
Akhtar added that he had many opinions on political issues but chose not to discuss them in a sports forum. He cited his experience attending an Under-19 match and praising Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma as an example of promoting positive sporting values.
Commenting on the handshake controversy between players, Akhtar criticised the practice of refusing to shake hands after matches, calling it inappropriate and damaging to the image of both nations. He said if teams do not want to play or engage in sportsmanship, they should avoid competition altogether and not participate for financial reasons.
The former pacer also referenced his participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL), noting that stepping away from the tournament did not significantly impact him, emphasising professionalism and respect in international cricket.
