Persistent rain disrupted the third day of the second Test, leaving England 261 runs ahead and in a strong position to take an unassailable 2-0 series lead.
LONDON – Web Desk: Rain frustrated England’s attempt to secure a series-clinching victory over Pakistan on Saturday as persistent showers prevented any play before lunch on the third day of the second Test at Lord’s.
Umpires planned an inspection at 1:15pm local time, or 5:15pm Pakistan time, provided there was no further rain. England entered the day in a commanding position at 81-3 in their second innings, holding an overall lead of 261 runs.
England are seeking a 2-0 lead in the three-match series after winning the opening Test at Headingley by an innings and 103 runs. A victory at Lord’s would give Joe Root’s side an unassailable series advantage.
England dominate after Pakistan collapse
England built their strong position after dismissing Pakistan for just 110 in their first innings on Friday.
Seamer Ollie Robinson produced outstanding figures of 4-11 from 13 overs, while Jofra Archer claimed 3-26 and Josh Tongue took 2-27. Pakistan’s Azan Awais was the visitors’ top scorer with 46, while Saud Shakeel was the only other batter to make more than 10.
Pakistan’s innings lasted only 37.2 overs and ended nine wickets down, with opener Imam-ul-Haq unable to bat after suffering a calf injury while fielding on the opening day.
The collapse gave England a first-innings lead of 180 runs.
England recover after early second-innings setbacks
England initially struggled in their second innings, losing two wickets for 13 runs as Pakistan’s bowlers continued to find movement from the Lord’s surface.
The hosts eventually recovered to 81-3 before bad light brought an early end to Friday’s play. Emilio Gay was unbeaten on 30, while Harry Brook was on seven at the close.
England’s overall lead had reached 261 runs, placing Pakistan under significant pressure even before Saturday’s rain interruption.
Pakistan face difficult final-innings challenge
Pakistan have never scored more than 234 in the fourth innings of a Test against England in England, according to the Dawn report, while their total across three completed innings in the current series remains below England’s lead at Lord’s.
Pakistan had already suffered a heavy defeat in the opening Test at Headingley, where England won by an innings and 103 runs.
The second Test began more positively for Pakistan, with Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Ali taking seven wickets between them on a rain-affected first day. England, however, recovered to reach 290 before their bowlers took control of the match.
Series situation
England currently lead the three-match series 1-0. The second Test at Lord’s is scheduled to run from August 27 to 31, while the third Test is set for September 9-13 at Edgbaston.
The weather will now be a crucial factor in determining whether England can complete the victory they appeared to be building towards before rain interrupted play.
