Punjab Issues Rain Alert as Final Monsoon Spell Begins
LAHORE, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued an alert as the ninth and final spell of monsoon rainfall is forecast to affect several parts of the province between September 12 and 17, with authorities warning of urban flooding, flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.
According to the PDMA forecast, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang and Attock are expected to receive rain between September 12 and 17.
Rainfall is forecast to expand into more areas from September 14 to 17, including Lahore, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Wazirabad, Hafizabad, Kasur, Okara, Nankana Sahib and Sargodha.
Other areas expected to experience rainfall include Khushab, Mianwali, Noorpur Thal, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Dera Ghazi Khan and Multan, along with surrounding areas.
PDMA Director General Saif Anwar Jappa directed commissioners and deputy commissioners across Punjab to remain alert and ensure preparedness ahead of the expected rainfall. District administrations have been issued advance warnings under instructions from the provincial government.
Authorities have particularly warned about the possibility of urban flooding in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad, while flash flooding could affect local streams and rainwater channels.
A landslide risk has also been highlighted for Murree and the Galiat region, prompting authorities to maintain heightened vigilance in mountainous areas.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department’s Flood Forecasting Division independently supports the broader outlook. Its September 11 bulletin says a combination of an approaching westerly weather system and moist currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal is expected to produce scattered rain, wind and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy falls across Punjab and other regions between September 13 and 17.
The same official bulletin said flows in major rivers and associated nullahs could increase slightly during the period.
Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to follow official weather and emergency updates, particularly during intense rainfall, and avoid unnecessary movement through flooded roads, low-lying areas and fast-flowing waterways.
The approaching system is being described by PDMA Punjab as the final monsoon spell of the season, making the September 12–17 period important for both residents and emergency authorities across the province.
