Maryam Nawaz urges unity against extremists, suspends all Basant events in wake of tragedy
Lahore, Pakistan — Web Desk: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced the cancellation of all Basant celebrations following the deadly Islamabad Imambargah suicide blast. The decision includes the mega Basant show scheduled at Liberty Square, Lahore, which was to take place on February 7.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the nation must remain united against extremists and their sympathizers, showing no leniency while standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Pakistan’s armed forces.
The Chief Minister had previously announced Basant celebrations across the province from February 6 to 8, inviting citizens to participate in kite-flying festivities. The event had already begun in Lahore, but despite administrative arrangements, one person was killed and several injured due to kite strings, raising safety concerns.
Maryam Nawaz’s announcement underscores the government’s commitment to public safety amid heightened security concerns following recent terrorist attacks.
