Punjab CM inaugurates eco-friendly E-Taxi scheme empowering women

Date:

Lahore, Pakistan – Web Desk: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurated the province’s E-Taxi Scheme, introducing a landmark initiative aimed at promoting environmentally friendly transport and expanding employment opportunities for women.

The CM announced that the scheme will provide over 1,100 e-vehicles in its first phase, with more than 30% reserved for women drivers. Female professionals, including teachers and psychologists, are encouraged to join, supporting women’s economic participation while enhancing public mobility.

“Women in Punjab have nothing to fear; every daughter is safe, and the government will ensure full support,” Maryam Nawaz said, emphasizing safety and empowerment.

The initiative is complemented by the province-wide launch of the Green Bus Service, with 1,500 buses already deployed and an additional 1,100 expected. Free travel is provided for students, senior citizens, women, and persons with special needs. Work is ongoing on metro bus projects in Faisalabad and Gujranwala.

Financial incentives under the scheme include a 60% government-paid down payment for women drivers and 50% for men. Vehicle registration, fitness tests, and token tax fees will also be covered by the Punjab government. Monthly earnings for female drivers are projected between PKR 150,000 to 200,000.

Safety features include a panic button in every e-taxi, connected to the Punjab Safe City Authority. Vehicles are registered with Indrive and Yango, fast-charging stations will be installed at public locations, and digital payment systems will be available.

Maryam Nawaz also highlighted ongoing social welfare efforts during Ramadan, environmental improvements including smog reduction, and infrastructure enhancements such as roads, education, scholarships, and land provision, aiming to improve daily life for Punjab residents.
