PPP Opposes New Administrative Units Debate After Naqvi Proposal

Date:

The Pakistan Peoples Party says discussions on creating new administrative units should not be taken further, responding to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s proposal.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — WEB DESK: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has urged political leaders not to pursue further debate over the creation of new administrative units, responding to recent remarks by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

Speaking to the media, senior PPP leader Nadeem Afzal Chan said it would be better not to take the discussion any further, stressing that the issue could generate unnecessary political controversy at a time when the country faces more pressing national challenges.

PPP Responds to Naqvi’s Proposal

The statement came after Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi suggested that Pakistan should consider creating additional administrative units to improve governance and public service delivery.

Naqvi argued that population growth and administrative challenges have increased the need for reforms in the country’s governance structure.

PPP Calls for Focus on National Priorities

The PPP maintained that discussions over new administrative units are not a priority at present and said political parties should instead focus on economic recovery, public welfare and strengthening democratic institutions.

Party leaders also stressed that constitutional and political consensus would be essential before any major administrative restructuring could be considered.

Constitutional Process Required

Under Pakistan’s Constitution, any proposal involving changes to provincial boundaries or administrative structures would require legal and constitutional procedures, including political consultation where applicable.

Analysts say the issue has surfaced periodically in Pakistan’s political debate, particularly in relation to improving governance in densely populated provinces, but it remains politically sensitive.

No formal government proposal to create new administrative units has been announced.
